Starting October 1, 2024, On-Street Accessible Parking Spaces in Kaohsiung Will Be Subject to Fees under Disabled Parking Concession Regulations
[Kaohsiung News] To protect the parking rights of people with disabilities and address the issue of reserved parking spaces being occupied for extended periods, on-street accessible parking spaces in Kaohsiung will be managed under a fee-based system starting October 1, 2024. Holders of disabled parking permits or vehicles with disability-specific license plates will be eligible for parking discounts.
Due to the previous lack of parking fees, accessible parking spaces were frequently occupied for extended periods, leading to concerns about the privatization of public resources and unfair practices. Citizens have repeatedly suggested implementing a fee system to improve the turnover rate of these parking spaces.
According to the Kaohsiung City Transportation Bureau, to ensure fair and efficient use of public parking resources while maintaining the parking rights of people with disabilities, on-street accessible parking spaces will be subject to fees based on the hourly or per-use rates of each designated parking area from October 1, 2024.
According to the "Parking Fee Concession Regulations for People with Disabilities at Public Parking Lots Managed by the Kaohsiung City Transportation Bureau," holders of disabled parking permits or vehicles with disability-specific license plates are eligible for parking discounts, whether using standard spaces or accessible parking spaces. Eligible Kaohsiung City residents can park for free in hourly parking spaces for the first four cumulative hours each day, with full rates applying from the fifth hour onward. For per-use parking spaces, a 50% discount will be applied. Eligible non-Kaohsiung residents will receive a 50% discount for both hourly and per-use parking spaces.
The Transportation Bureau urges citizens to adhere to parking regulations: regular vehicles are strictly prohibited from occupying accessible parking spaces, and vehicles with disability-specific plates are not to occupy these spaces for extended periods. The city government will continue to strengthen patrols and crack down on violations to maintain an orderly parking environment for all.
