Beware of Hot Summer Temperatures! Transportation Bureau Plans to Adjust Traffic Signal Timings to Shorten Waiting Times
[Kaohsiung News] As summer brings scorching temperatures, motorcyclists waiting at traffic lights without shade may wonder why the signal duration cannot be shortened to reduce exposure to the sun. Kaohsiung City's Transportation Bureau has announced plans to gradually pilot reduced traffic signal cycles in selected sections of Sanmin and Lingya Districts starting in July. This initiative aims to decrease the duration of sun exposure during red lights, with the Bureau closely monitoring traffic flow improvements and make adjustments as necessary.
According to the Transportation Bureau, in response to the hot summer climate, it will continue the cycle adjustment plan implemented last summer. Beginning in July, during midday hours, secondary roads will be selected for shortened signal cycles while balancing traffic flow efficiency and pedestrian safety. The areas involved include east of Zhonghua Road (excluding Zhonghua Road), west of Bo’ai Road (excluding Bo’ai Road), south of Shiquan Road, and north of Jiuru Road (excluding Jiuru Road) in Sanmin District, as well as east of Zhongshan Road (excluding Zhongshan), west of Minquan Road, and south of Wufu Road (excluding Wufu) in Lingya District. The original cycle of 150 seconds will be reduced to 120 seconds, shortening the cycle by 30 seconds to accelerate the change of signal phases and reduce single waiting times at intersections.
The Bureau stressed that adjusting traffic signal cycles involves careful consideration of factors such as specific intersection conditions, main and secondary road traffic volumes, pedestrian crossing requirements, road segment synchronization, and complex multi-phase intersections. Continuous monitoring of traffic flow improvements and signal group coordination will guide timely adjustments as needed. Road users are reminded to prioritize traffic safety, adhere to signals, and refrain from attempting to circumvent waiting zones or rush, as these actions can lead to accidents.
