Age is not the issue—safety is the priority. In light of Taiwan’s aging population and the growing focus on senior traffic safety, the Kaohsiung City Government Transportation Bureau has partnered with the Directorate General of Highways' Kaohsiung City Motor Vehicles Office and Kaohsiung Motor Vehicles Office to launch a raffle campaign encouraging elderly drivers to return their driver’s licenses. From now until July 31, 2025, seniors aged 75 or older who successfully return their driver’s license will receive a NT$100 gift card and be eligible for a raffle to win the grand prize—a Taiwan Railways TR PASS 5-Day Ticket valued at NT$1,600. The initiative aims to encourage seniors to embrace public transportation and enjoy a vibrant, car-free lifestyle.
The Transportation Bureau stated that with advancing age, drivers may face physiological changes such as declining vision, slower reaction times, diminished hearing, and reduced muscular endurance. These factors, coupled with possible difficulties in understanding updated traffic regulations, can impact driving judgment and response capabilities. The central government continues to promote a license return mechanism for elderly drivers. This raffle-based incentive program is designed to further increase willingness among senior citizens to retire from driving, while also reflecting the Kaohsiung City Government’s commitment to promoting traffic safety for the elderly.
The Transportation Bureau emphasized that no registration is required for the campaign. All individuals aged 75 or above who, starting today, either receive a notification or voluntarily return their license at designated Motor Vehicles Offices or temporary service counters will automatically qualify for the raffle. The top prize includes 200 “Taiwan Railways TR PASS 5-Day Senior Tickets,” which allow unlimited rides on Taiwan Railways trains (excluding certain train types) within a 5-day period. This enables senior citizens to enjoy convenient travel, whether for tourism or family visits.
