Traffic Safety Campaigns Embedded in Community Life: Seniors Eagerly Participate in Prize Quiz Activities

[Kaohsiung News]

In an effort to enhance traffic safety awareness among the elderly, the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government has partnered with district offices to conduct a series of traffic safety campaigns. These activities recently reached the Baoning and Yonghua Community Development Associations in Yongan District, bringing transportation policies directly into the daily lives of local residents and into every household.

From January to April this year (2025), the Transportation Bureau has successively visited community development associations and senior activity centers in Lujhu, Hunei, Cieding, Alian, and Yongan Districts. In addition, outreach efforts have extended to local markets, parks, temples, health clinics, and farmers’ associations—locations frequented by large numbers of people.

According to the Bureau, the campaign focuses on five key themes: motorcycle riding safety, senior pedestrian safety, strict prohibition of drunk driving, awareness of large vehicles, and pedestrian safety. The sessions also include reminders about the major causes of Category A1 traffic accidents.

Considering that the majority of the audience at these campaign sites are elderly citizens, large visual aids are used to explain current traffic regulations. These are complemented by real-life traffic accident videos, enabling the elderly to learn through visual and situational methods that facilitate better understanding and memory retention. Moreover, prize quiz activities are incorporated to promote interactive learning. The seniors responded enthusiastically, raising their hands eagerly to answer questions, creating a lively atmosphere filled with laughter and applause.

The Transportation Bureau emphasized that ensuring road safety is not solely the government's responsibility, but also requires active participation from every citizen. By continuously promoting traffic safety concepts at the neighborhood level, the campaign not only enhances public awareness but also contributes to reducing traffic accidents. The Bureau will continue to conduct grassroots campaigns across the city, striving together with residents to create a safe, comfortable, and friendly traffic environment—making safety an integral part of everyday life.
