Every safe journey starts with wearing a helmet! Based on traffic accident data analysis, more than 80% of fatalities in single-day (30-day) death cases involved head injuries. According to statistics from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications in previous years, the fatality rate for individuals not wearing helmets in traffic accidents is 8.63 times higher than for those who wore helmets correctly. The Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government strongly urges all citizens to wear certified helmets when riding motorcycles, light electric two-wheel vehicles, or bicycles to safeguard their lives.
The Transportation Bureau emphasized that past cases clearly show that riders without helmets face significantly higher rates of head injuries in traffic accidents, as well as a much greater risk of fatal harm. Head injuries can result in permanent disabilities or even death. Wearing a helmet is not only a legal requirement but also an essential element for safe riding.
Currently, a variety of certified helmets are available on the market. Some models prioritize comfort, while others focus on design. Citizens are encouraged to choose helmet types that suit their personal needs. Additionally, it is important to select a helmet that properly fits the shape of one’s head. Helmets with three-quarter or full-face coverage offer better protection and enhance road safety.
Besides wearing a helmet before heading out, ensuring it is properly secured is also crucial. The chin strap should be fastened behind the chin, with approximately a one- to two-finger width gap from the chin. It is also important to note that helmets have a limited lifespan and should not be used indefinitely. It is recommended to replace a helmet if it has been in use for five years from the date of manufacture, two years from the first use on the road, or after sustaining a hard impact or crash, in order to maintain its protective effectiveness.
The Transportation Bureau calls on all citizens to wear helmets regardless of whether they are riding motorcycles, light electric two-wheel vehicles, or bicycles. Furthermore, do not forget to provide and properly secure certified helmets for children passengers as well. Ensuring your own safety and that of your family is paramount—helmets are the last line of defense in protecting life. Do not break the law or put yourself in danger. Let us work together to create a safer traffic environment for everyone.
