After Getting Off a Vehicle, Everyone Becomes a Pedestrian: Transportation Bureau Continues to Review and Plan Connected Pedestrian Safety Routes

In response to recent media reports concerning the absence of pedestrian crossings or facilities on Tiedao Street in Sanmin District and Kaisyuan 4th Road in Cianjhen District, the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government issued a statement clarifying that the primary consideration is to meet the needs of road users crossing intersections after parking or disembarking.

Tiedao Street in Sanmin District is an approximately 9-meter-wide one-way street heading east. The intersections at Nenjiang Street and Hankou Street were both completed in 2021 as part of the Railway Park Project by the Railway Bureau. Since early 2025, following the opening of the eastern extension to Jhansi Road, traffic volume has increased. Construction is still ongoing at the rear entrance of Kaohsiung Senior High School. In addition, there is a demand for roadside parking on the south side of the Tiedao/Nenjiang intersection. Therefore, essential pedestrian facilities in the area are retained following careful assessment.

On Kaisyuan 4th Road in Cianjhen District, roadside parking spaces are provided between Shihdai South 2nd Road and Shihdai South 1st Road. Considering the continued need for pedestrians to cross Kaisyuan Road after parking, pedestrian crossings have been designated at both intersections to ensure that individuals exiting their vehicles can choose a nearby crossing and traverse the road safely in accordance with signal phases. This arrangement aims to prevent unsafe mid-block pedestrian crossings by those who park on the roadside.
