【Kaohsiung News】
In celebration of World Car Free Day on September 22, the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government is encouraging residents to leave their cars at home and explore Kaohsiung in a low-carbon and healthy way. YouBike and MeNGo have each launched special activities for the occasion. Starting September 15, YouBike is holding a cycling check-in campaign, while MeNGo will offer an additional public transportation campaign on September 22. Residents can explore the city, help protect the environment, and have the chance to take home a variety of useful prizes.
The Transportation Bureau stated that YouBike is holding the “Ride Kaohsiung: Check In and Explore” campaign from September 15 to September 30, inviting residents to ride YouBike to popular attractions throughout Kaohsiung. By interacting on social media and checking in at designated attractions, participants will have a chance to win camping gear, keyboard-and-mouse sets, travel organizers, and other prizes.
For public transportation, MeNGo is also launching the “My Green Commute Day—Ride with MeNGo for World Car Free Day” campaign, encouraging residents to replace private vehicle trips with public transportation on September 22 and put low-carbon, green commuting into practice. Residents who use TPASS/MeNGo to take public transportation that day and complete the designated activities on the MeNGo Facebook page—including leaving a comment, tagging two friends, and submitting the event form—will be eligible to receive a convenience store coffee e-voucher, limited to the first 200 participants. Those who additionally share creative photos will also have a chance to win major prizes, including a period pass redemption voucher valued at approximately NT$1,000. Everyone is invited to get creative and capture their own version of “Car Free Day.”
The Transportation Bureau stated that, as of the end of August 2026, cumulative YouBike ridership in Kaohsiung had exceeded 93 million trips, with more than 1,500 rental stations citywide. From major urban areas to neighborhood streets and alleys, YouBike has become widely available throughout Kaohsiung.
Meanwhile, MeNGo, an integrated mobility pass covering multiple modes of public transportation, has recorded cumulative sales of more than 3 million passes in Kaohsiung. By integrating buses, the MRT, light rail, and other public transportation services, MeNGo enables residents to transfer conveniently among different modes with a single pass. The program has also contributed to a citywide reduction of more than 110,000 metric tons of carbon emissions, further advancing sustainable transportation in Kaohsiung.
In addition, September is Road Safety Month. This year, the Transportation Bureau is focusing on the two key themes of “Enhancing Motorcycle Safety” and “Sustaining a Culture of Yielding.” The Bureau reminds residents that, while supporting World Car Free Day on September 22 by making greater use of public transportation and choosing green mobility options, road safety must remain a priority. Motorcycle riders should comply with traffic regulations, avoid speeding, and slow down when approaching intersections. Drivers should also actively yield to pedestrians. Through these efforts, Kaohsiung will continue moving toward becoming a safer, more livable, and more sustainable city.
